OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its popular chatbot specifically designed for young people aged 13 to 17. The San Francisco technology company has implemented a range of protective measures aimed at creating a safer environment for adolescent users, including restrictions on conversations related to suicide, self-harm, and sexual or romantic content. The teen version also incorporates educational features intended to support homework and study efforts by guiding students toward learning rather than simply providing ready-made answers or completed essays.

The initiative reflects OpenAI's broader philosophy of introducing AI tools to younger audiences in ways that account for their developmental stage. Ann O'Leary, vice president of global policy at OpenAI, described the approach as balancing respect for teens' growing maturity with necessary protective boundaries. "We want to treat teens like teens, which means that we have to make sure that we're showing up with the right developmental stage when we're not either talking down to them or treating them like kids, but we're also making sure that they're not exposed to material that they shouldn't be exposed to," O'Leary explained.

The rollout arrives amid mounting concern from parents, educators, and child development specialists about teenagers' interactions with AI systems. A 2025 study by Common Sense Media found that more than 70 percent of American teenagers are already using AI chatbots for companionship, with roughly half employing them on a regular basis. This widespread adoption has raised particular concerns given that teenage brains remain developmentally incomplete, leaving young people more susceptible to emotional attachment and unhealthy dependency patterns. Sam Altman, OpenAI's chief executive, has acknowledged the company's awareness of this vulnerability, describing "emotional overreliance" on AI technology as a widespread phenomenon among young users.

OpenAI's safeguards attempt to address this vulnerability through multiple mechanisms. "Announcements like these can be seen as a step in the right direction," Bouffard observed. "But I also would caution against parents being lured into this false sense of safety based on the announcement."

OpenAI's approach to age verification relies on algorithmic estimation rather than strict identity confirmation. The company analyses user query patterns and other digital signals to identify likely minors, automatically routing them to the teen version if they are identified as under 18 or if they self-identify as such. This mirrors Meta's approach to Instagram teen accounts, which similarly impose stricter content filtering and privacy restrictions than standard adult accounts. While this method avoids creating barriers to access, it remains vulnerable to circumvention by determined users.

Parental controls represent another significant component of OpenAI's teen protection framework, though they require active engagement from both teenagers and their guardians. Parents with linked accounts gain the ability to establish "quiet hours" when their teens cannot access ChatGPT and receive safety notifications during high-risk situations, including potential self-harm. OpenAI has introduced additional notifications specifically focused on eating disorder risks. Nevertheless, the optional nature of these controls means that many teenagers using the service will not benefit from them, particularly those without tech-savvy or attentive parents.

The homework and study support functionality represents a potential strategic advantage for OpenAI beyond child safety considerations. Rather than generating complete answers, the teen version is designed to engage students in active problem-solving, aligning with educational research demonstrating that people learn more effectively through struggle and engagement with difficult concepts.
