The Health Ministry confirmed on Wednesday that Jekan Raya, a subdistrict within Palangka Raya in Central Kalimantan, recorded an Air Pollutant Index reading of 573 based on monitoring data from 17 air-quality stations, placing it firmly in the hazardous category where the general population faces serious respiratory risks.

The scale of the environmental emergency extends well beyond Central Kalimantan's most affected areas. Environmental Health Director Then Suyanti disclosed that Muaro Jambi Regency in neighbouring Jambi province also reached hazardous levels, recording an API of 302. This guidance extends to areas merely registering very unhealthy readings, where citizens are urged to minimise time spent outside and reduce physical exertion in open spaces.

Responding to the public health emergency, Indonesia's Health Ministry is preparing comprehensive intervention measures designed to protect vulnerable populations and maintain essential services. A formal circular from the ministry's secretary-general is expected within the coming two days, outlining specific protocols for government agencies and educational institutions. Among the contemplated measures is authorization for schools to transition to distance learning whenever air quality measurements deteriorate beyond safe thresholds, ensuring educational continuity while protecting student health.

The geographical and demographic scale of this crisis is staggering. Agus Jamaludin, heading the ministry's Health Crisis Centre, revealed that the ongoing fires have directly affected approximately 3.4 million people distributed across seven provinces. These provinces—Riau, Jambi, and South Sumatra on the island of Sumatra, together with West, Central, East, and South Kalimantan on the island of Borneo—have collectively declared emergency alert status. However, the persistence of thousands of hotspots indicates that firefighting and fire suppression capabilities remain insufficient relative to the scale of burning.
