Despite the severity of the malfunction, pilots managed to land the aircraft safely at the Indian capital, preventing what could have become a catastrophic outcome.

For approximately four seconds, a critical window that would have felt like an eternity to those aboard, the flight crew found themselves unable to manipulate the elevators and ailerons. These control surfaces—the movable sections on the aircraft's wings and tail—are fundamental to an airplane's ability to change pitch and execute banking manoeuvres. Without their function, the aircraft pitched upward uncontrollably. The first officer responded by applying maximum nose-down input to the control column, yet the flight control surfaces failed to respond initially, creating a situation where pilot inputs had no measurable effect on the aircraft's attitude.

The recovery occurred when the three hydraulic systems restored themselves within seconds, allowing pilots to regain authority over the aircraft and establish a safe descent profile to Delhi. However, the abrupt altitude change subjected the aircraft to forces exceeding the structural design specifications, raising serious questions about potential internal damage not immediately visible during cursory inspections.

Airbus has initiated a comprehensive diagnostic process to determine the root cause of the simultaneous hydraulic failure, an event that should theoretically be prevented by the redundancy built into modern aircraft design. The manufacturer requested that Air India conduct extensive testing of the hydraulic systems themselves, as well as the pressure sensors and monitoring switches that are supposed to alert crews to system anomalies. Additional sensors are slated for removal and detailed laboratory analysis, with Airbus indicating that comprehensive wiring inspections may become necessary as the investigation deepens.

Structural integrity now represents another significant concern following the violent manoeuvre. Air India initially characterised the occurrence as weather-related turbulence, a description that subsequent statements abandoned in favour of acknowledging a sudden and unexplained altitude loss. This shift in official narrative raised questions about what initial assessments may have missed.

A complicating factor emerged when the flight's captain tested positive for marijuana in a confirmatory screening, according to sources familiar with the matter. While investigators have emphasised that no causal connection has been established between the positive result and the altitude loss, the discovery prompted Air India to implement mandatory substance testing for all pilots beginning August 13. The timing and nature of this procedural change underscored the airline's commitment to ensuring comprehensive safety protocols.

The incident occurs at a particularly sensitive moment for Air India, which operates under ownership by India's Tata Group with a significant 25 per cent stake held by Singapore Airlines. The carrier is undertaking a major operational turnaround while managing substantial financial losses and increasingly stringent regulatory oversight.
