This figure underscores how thoroughly digital-first mindsets have penetrated Malaysian society, from financial transactions and e-commerce to government services and social media engagement. The finding positions Malaysia firmly within the ranks of digitally mature nations, where online activity has become as routine as traditional offline interactions.
Yet this remarkable adoption rate masks a growing disconnect between convenience and confidence. The IDEMIA Group, a specialist in biometrics, cryptography and digital security solutions, found that more than half of Malaysian respondents—53 per cent—feel significantly more vulnerable online now than they did five years ago. This perception shift suggests that as Malaysians have become more sophisticated digital users, their awareness of attendant risks has sharpened considerably. The acceleration of digital adoption during and after the COVID-19 pandemic may have outpaced the development of corresponding security literacy and protective infrastructure.
Concerns about specific digital threats reveal the breadth of apprehension. Eighty-seven per cent of respondents worry about fraud perpetrated through digital channels, while 91 per cent express anxiety about personal data theft when engaging with online services. These figures indicate that security anxieties are not confined to niche concerns but represent mainstream preoccupations among the Malaysian digital population. Financial fraud and identity theft rank among the most tangible threats that consumers encounter, whether directly or through media coverage of large-scale breaches affecting regional and international companies.
A particularly telling finding is that nearly half of respondents acknowledge a knowledge gap in their own understanding. Although aware that cyber risks exist, many Malaysians do not fully comprehend how threats operate or the pathways through which they might be exposed to harm. This disconnect between awareness and comprehension is significant for policymakers and security practitioners. It suggests that public messaging about cybersecurity, while perhaps successfully raising alarm, has not translated into practical understanding that might enable Malaysians to protect themselves more effectively.

Instead, user expectations are evolving in a particular direction—consumers increasingly demand that security protections be woven seamlessly into their digital experiences without sacrificing ease of use or convenience. The landscape of cyber threats itself is becoming more sophisticated and multifaceted. The IDEMIA study identifies artificial intelligence-driven cyberattacks as a major driver of rising security concerns among Malaysians. AI capabilities are enabling attackers to automate, personalise and amplify their campaigns at scale, from phishing emails that adapt to individual targets to fraud detection systems that evade traditional safeguards. For a nation with high digital adoption rates, the proliferation of AI-powered threats represents a qualitatively different risk environment than existed even two or three years ago.
Beyond immediate threats, emerging technologies such as quantum computing are beginning to influence discussions about long-term digital security strategy and national resilience. While quantum computing remains theoretical for most Malaysians—only a minority report clear understanding of the technology—those familiar with it already perceive significant cybersecurity implications. Eighty-three per cent of respondents with quantum computing knowledge view it as a potential threat to existing encryption and security protocols. This forward-looking concern is not unfounded; quantum computers could theoretically compromise many of the cryptographic systems currently protecting sensitive data, transactions and communications.
The quantum computing concern raises important questions about Malaysia's readiness for technological transitions that may reshape digital security fundamentals. Governments, financial institutions and large corporations are beginning to invest in quantum-resistant cryptography and post-quantum security frameworks, yet awareness and preparedness among the broader Malaysian population lags considerably.
